The Law of Intestacy

Unless you have a will, the rules of intestacy will decide who inherits your estate. These rules are based on your family relationships - and they are complex to ensure everyone you might have included in your will is considered. They don't take account of how close you were, your wishes, or the needs of your family.
The rules allocate your estate to family members in strict order. Your spouse will take the bulk, but unmarried partners are excluded. They get nothing. But if you have split up, but not divorced, your former parter will be entitled to the bulk of your estate.
